How to Make Money in Rift from the Price Disparities on the Auction House

As a trader in the stock market, looking for a quick and easy way to make a profit is what it is all about.  Looking for price disparities between stocks and other convertible assets is fairly simple.  For example, let’s say you have a bond or a stock option that can be converted into 100 shares of ABC stock at any time and the last trade on ABC stock was @ $50.  That bond or option should be worth $5,000 (100 X $50).  What if you saw someone selling it for $4,500?  Awesome, well you buy it for $4,500, convert the bond or option into 100 shares of ABC and sell it immediately for $5,000, netting you a $500 profit.  Pretty simple, but before you quit your job and become a trader, let me tell you these price disparities do not exist or if they do, it is because they know something you don’t.

However, in Rift there are price disparities rampant all over the Auction House that you can profit from.  Some require you to have a specific crafting profession while others don’t.

Runecrafting is probably the most lucrative crafting profession since people are always buying materials, yet you do not even need to be a runecrafter to make money.  The goal is to break down and convert higher end materials into the lower tier materials and sell those off.  They may not sell as fast as the higher end materials, but they do sell and usually without as much competition.

Here is an example:

1 Kinetic Burst = 15 Kinetic Arc = 3 Kinetic Charge

Breaking down 1 Kinetic Burst costing 40 gold will give you 15 Kinetic Arc which can sell for 75 gold.

Profit [35 gold] / Cost [40 gold] = 87.5% Return on Investment (ROI)

Breaking down 1 Kinetic Burst costing 40 gold will give you 3 Kinetic Charge which sell for 3 X 20 gold  = 60 gold.

Profit [20 gold] / Cost [40 gold] = 50% Return on Investment (ROI)

I guarantee you can buy Kinetic Burst for a lot cheaper than 40 gold which would increase your ROI significantly.

Another Runecrafting example:

Prices on these vary a lot, but let’s take a look at the Shimmering epic materials.  You can buy Shimmering Crystals anywhere from 1 to 3 platinum, let’s just assume you bought one for 2 platinum.

Breaking down 1 Shimmering Crystal costing 2 platinum will give you 9 Shimmering Powders which can sell for 50 gold each or 4.5 platinum.

Profit [2.5 Platinum] / Cost [2 Platinum] = 125% Return on Investment (ROI)

Apothecary:

Minor Catalysts  and Catalytic Essences

Converting 1 Minor Catalyst costing 1 platinum into 3 Catalytic Essences which can sell for 3 X 1 plat = 3 platinum

Profit [2 Platinum] / Cost [1 Platinum] = 200% Return on Investment (ROI)

Mining and Foraging:

Price disparities are easily and often found within Mining and Foraging since the conversion is 1:1.  If you can’t convert the materials yourself try to find someone that would be willing to convert the raw materials to crafting materials for a tip.  Ores can be converted into Bars, Timber can be converted into Lumber.

Prices and results vary server to server.  I have viewed 10 different Auction Houses and on each one, price disparities existed.  Becoming familiar with which crafting materials convert into what and the prices on your server is the key to your success.

Rift 1.5 Runes, Potions and Consumables for PVP

This basically shows all end game gear, runes, potions and consumables all mages will want to strive for as of Rift 1.5

Since there is really nothing else to spend currency on in this game, equipping yourself with the best potions and consumables is a good way to maximize your character.  Some of the items require farming, some of the items require crafting, and some of the items just require time.  Remember, it’s all the little things that add up to making you a fierce competitor.

If you are like me and find yourself sitting in town most of the time, might as well craft and make some potions and consumables in between warfronts.

P8 Sword and Book vs P8 Staff, Interesting Find

Several people have asked why I use Sword and Book opposed to the Staff.  Let’s take a quick look at the stats of each.

P8 Soothsayer’s Mageblade & Archangelic’s Tome

  • +64 INT
  • +58 WIS
  • +51 Endurance
  • +673 Spell Power
  • + 38 Spell Crit

P8 Soothsayer’s Greatstaff

  • +61 INT
  • +42 WIS
  • +41 Endurance
  • +692 Spell Power
  • +45 Spell Crit

The difference between the two is marginal.  The reasons everyone chose staff early on was because Burning Witchstones were only applicable with the 2h Staff, which made the choice very easy.  Then Burning Powerstones were introduced, and unlike their predecessor, the new powerstones were equippable on either a 1h or 2h.

Initially, I chose the sword and book for one reason alone, +10 Endurance.  I equipped my sword with a Baneful Rune to make my weapon glow and the tome with an Incandescent Calamitous Runeshard.

The other day, I was looking through all the available runes and came across Blazing Adamant Rune +11 Endurance for tome.  Many of you already know how much I like to stack Endurance, and adding this made my day.  Then I began looking for a consumable for my tome and sure enough I found these, Burning Manastones +400 maximum mana by 400 for 4 hours.  I believe Ancient Burning Manastones drop in chronicles now too.

For those of you that like to maximize your characters, equipping the Sword and Book is far more superior than the Staff.

3rd 500 Platinum Winner, Corky

Our next 500 platinum winner’s comment poses several interesting questions that I feel are worth talking about.

Very interested to hear more of your take on the player run economy, particularly w/r/t crafting.  Unfortunately, we’re in agreement that high-end crafting items are only good for players that have high level alts AND have lots of money.  Once again, the money makers appear to be the gatherers, who sell their mats to the crafting suckers.

Do you have any tips on ways (other than gathering) for people to make money using their heads instead of grunt work?  Do you see any money-making patterns that have applied to MMO’s time after time?  The PvE -> PvP transfer trick seems so obvious, in hindsight, but that’s not something you’d ordinarily see allowed in MMO’s.

Did you ever play SWG?  Best.  Economy.  Ever.  No idea why more MMO’s don’t copy this model.

By the time I started my blog, Rift had already been out several months and I really never got to showcase my ability to make money in Rift.  As a trader in the stock market, playing the Auction House was extremely fun for me, it was like a mini-game within Rift.  The reason there are very few articles on my blog regarding making money in Rift is because there were very few lucrative items to sell as profit margins were already too low from increased competition.

  • How did I amass such unfathomable amounts of currency in Warhammer and Rift?
  • How will I make money in any future MMO?

Whenever you start any new game, you should really focus on leveling your character to maximum level and forget about crafting.  Once you achieve that, you should have a good grasp of the game and determine which crafting skills to pick up.  I basically break down my money making strategy into 2 different stages in the game:

1.  Sell crafting materials or crafted items.

As with any game, potions will always have the highest demand since they are consumed.  Healing and Mana potions is where you should make the bulk of your money for the first several months.  Most people are so focused on armor and weapons and negelect the use of potions until much later in the game allowing you to buy materials fairly cheap.  As soon as you have enough money, venture into another crafting profession.  It is very important to take note as to which items are selling and and what prices.  This will help you determine which items to concentrate on.

Creating Artificial Supply – Secret to Acquiring Materials

Here is one of my biggest secrets as to acquiring materials, creating artificial supply.  As you start making money, you should slowly be acquiring materials at reasonable costs.  Once you have sufficient stacks of each material now the fun begins!

Lets say there are 5 stacks of a particular item you want listed at 20 gold each.  From my own inventory, I would then list stacks of that material for 19, 18, 17 and some smaller stacks at 16 and 15.  Ideally you will want to be the only person showing up on the first page.  The goal is not only to get those existing sellers to undercut you, what you are really doing is setting a price ceiling for any new materials that show up on the Auction House and buying it all up.  If things go wrong and someone starts buying up your inventory listed then snatch up the 5 stacks at 20 gold.  You end up losing a small amount of money, but gain tremendous information regarding the demand for that particular item.  This requires alot of inventory, deep pockets and a perpetual eye on the AH.  However, once you are able to manipulate the market in virtually every item listed on the AH, the money flow is astronomical!  Once the money starts coming in, equipping the best runes or having the best available potions in the game at your disposal will really make you a force to reckon with on the battlefield.

2. Sell armor or weapons to ALTs.

I wrote an article that talks about when to shift your focus from crafting materials or items to equipment for ALTs.  This is where crafting lower level weapons and armor come into play.

Nerfs to Blood Thirsty and Mighty Quickening Brew, Future Predictions

A couple months ago I talked about a two things in particular that I thought were over powered, Blood Thirsty and Mighty Quickening Brew.  Needless to say, both of them have or will be nerfed.

Changes on PTS Server:

Guild Perk:  Blood Thirsty:  Duration increased to 10 seconds, percentage healed lowered to 5-15% healing, and now cannot trigger a second time while active.

For those of you that missed the thread posted in the general forums that might have lead the push for the nerf to Blood Thirsty.  Thank you Rivencsky for citing my blog!

Rift 1.4.1 brought changes to Mighty Quickening Brew:

Quickening Brews now work on their correct cooldown groups.  Quickening Brews now have a duration of 5 seconds.

Perhaps, Trion is actually reading my blog!?  Doubt it, but this should at least prove my ability to recognize items as OP.  My next predictions, they change Heroic Philter of Restoration and nerf Devouring Shadows.  I also feel a big change in Apothecary coming…
